Nathan joins 4Front as chief medical advisor

Written by Marc Schwarz

Dr. David Nathan was named chief medical advisor for 4Front Holdings, a leading retail and brand development cannabis company.

Nathan, founder and board president of Doctors for Cannabis Regulation and one of the founding steering committee members of New Jersey United for Marijuana Reform, is a clinical associate professor of psychiatry at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

“I’m an educator at heart.  So, my greatest joy in this new role is helping with the evidence-based education of clinicians, patients, and the public about cannabis,” Nathan told NJ Cannabis Media. ” We’ve already hit the ground running, as I’m developing a state-of-the-art and state-of-the-science curriculum for physicians that I hope will be the best and most practical recommenders’ guide to medical cannabis yet written. With 4Front’s support, I also plan to educate patients, caregivers and the wider public about the true risks and benefits of cannabis, as we still must combat persistent and harmful misconceptions that date back to the early ‘Reefer Madness’ days of cannabis prohibition.”

As chief medical advisor, Nathan will keep 4Front abreast of new scientific research related to medical cannabis, and offer strategic guidance as it relates to all aspects of patient care, cannabis research, medical safety, medical compliance and administration of cannabis as a medicine, according to a statement from the company.

“We’re pleased to welcome Dr. Nathan to our senior leadership team, and we expect his impeccable and proven track record and thoughtful approach to effective legalization and regulation of medical marijuana will be valuable assets for 4Front,” Kris Krane, president of 4Front, said in the statement. “This important and timely addition to our clinical team underscores 4Front’s progress and longstanding commitment to patient advocacy as it relates to safety, medical compliance and the administration of cannabis as medicine, keeping it as one of 4Front’s highest priorities.”

Nathan explained why he took the position.

“4Front has a powerful team of leaders in their respective areas of expertise, and their growth in the nascent medical cannabis space has been remarkable. More importantly, I chose to join 4Front because of its commitment to the patients and communities in which 4Front operates. 4Front was started by people like me, beginning as advocates for public health and social justice through common sense changes to our nation’s failed ‘war on drugs.’ 4Front President Kris Krane was a co-founder of Students for a Sensible Drug Policy and serves on the boards of SSDP and NORML. Training Director Sean Gallagher is a veteran who sits on the board of the Veterans Cannabis Project. Chief Compliance Officer Leah Heise was the CEO of Women Grow, which seeks gender parity in the cannabis industry.  And the list goes on,” Nathan said.
